The FR Black Edition is a high-spec version of the popular and critically regarded Ateca SUV. FR stands for Formula Racing, a clear indication that this particular iteration is one of the quickest crossovers around. It’s also the boldest Ateca version available, one that’s guaranteed to attract admiring glances.
The Black Edition is so called due its pitch-dark fixture and fittings which give this specific Ateca model a flavour all its own. Roof rails, window and headlight trims, radiator grille, wheel arch surrounds and 19-inch alloy wheels – all boast an eye-catching black finish.
However, this Ateca version isn’t simply concerned with aesthetics. For instance, a power tailgate utilises a ‘virtual pedal’ system. Whenever your hands are full with shopping or luggage (and you have your key about your person), simply motion your foot under the rear bumper and the tailgate will open.
The car’s outwardly sporty attributes are reflected on the inside too, hence the inclusion of a three-spoke leather steering wheel, leather gear knob and aluminium pedals. Multi-coloured LED lighting is another standout feature, one that allows you to generate a range of cabin moods.
The Ateca FR Black Edition is as practical and comfortable as it is easy on the eye. For instance, both front seats offer adjustment and lumbar-support options, electrically powered in the driver’s case, with memory functionality. Indeed, all seats provide plenty of support and comfort, and are finished in tactile black leather. Also, 60/40 split-folding rear seats enable a 485-litre load capacity to further expand.
It’s fitting that the coolest Ateca iteration should feature a nine-speaker Beats Audio system, which means the car not only looks good, it sounds amazing. Certainly, a 340-watt amplifier delivers more than sufficient sonic power while surround-sound technology will ensure that your favourite tunes truly come alive. Meanwhile, the presence of a subwoofer box delivers enhanced bass response and, therefore, a clearer, richer sound.
The Ateca comes with Euro NCAP’s maximum five-star crash-test approval, and an array of safety tech. As well as multiple airbags, front and rear seatbelt reminders and ISOFIX child-seat anchorage points, you’ll find driver aids galore. For example, Hill-hold Control allows seamless starts on an incline by holding the vehicle stationary, enabling you to proceed without using the handbrake. This ensures that the vehicle doesn’t roll during the two seconds that follow the release of the brake pedal.
The Black Edition is fitted with a 1.5-litre 148bhp engine which produces a peak torque of 250Nm, enabling nippy acceleration (0-62mph in nine seconds). However, optimal power resides with a range-topping 2.0-litre all-wheel drivetrain which outputs 187bhp and 320Nm of torque, facilitating 0-62mph in less than seven seconds.
Whichever engine option you choose, it’ll come with a Start-Stop System. This clever technology conserves fuel by automatically switching off the engine whenever the car comes to a natural stop, at traffic lights, for instance.
