The ŠKODA Fabia is one of the best superminis available today, offering practicality, space and comfort in equal measure. And this versatile hatchback has recently received a facelift, making it more desirable than ever. Choose your ideal Fabia from S, SE Comfort, SE L, Colour Edition and Monte Carlo trim levels.
Design
With its new, sportier and more upmarket appearance, the Fabia is more exciting than ever, and standing apart from many of its competitors. And complementing its sharper design are standard-issue LED headlights, which incorporate slim daytime running lights. Meanwhile, a five-door body ensures that the car’s five-seat cabin and maximum-capacity 1,190-litre boot are easily accessible.
Thanks to its increased dimensions, the new ŠKODA Fabia offers more room inside than before, making it a truly family-focussed hatchback. Certainly, there’s plenty of space for four adults to travel in comfort – and for a young family of five, it represents an excellent choice. You’ll find plenty of useful cubby spaces positioned throughout too, which are handy for keeping the cabin free from clutter.
Engines and performance
The new ŠKODA Fabia comes with a selection of Euro 6d-compliant petrol engines, with power outputs ranging from 64bhp to 148bhp. This allows you to choose the option that most suits your motoring needs. Fuel consumption varies from 46.3mpg to 55.4mpg, while CO2 emissions start as low as 114g/km. The most powerful Fabia variant is the aptly named Monte Carlo trim, which is installed with a 1.5-litre 148bhp engine. Paired with automatic transmission as standard, this produces 250Nm of torque, allowing the vehicle to achieve 0-62mph in a little more than eight seconds. Something that offers the best of both worlds is a 108bhp option, which manages 0-62mph 10.3 seconds while delivering up to 55.4mpg and producing emissions from 117g/km.
Whether driving around towns and cities, or taking to the motorway, the Fabia delivers a smooth and surprisingly quiet ride. And the handling is steady and precise, comparing very favourably with many other superminis.
Technology and safety
Entry-level S grades feature a 6.5-inch colour screen and a four-speaker sound system (with AM/FM tuner and DAB radio), as well as Bluetooth connectivity, which enables audio streaming and hands-free communication. It’s worth considering an upgrade to the higher spec SE L trim if you’d like an extra pair of speakers – and a 9.2-inch Amundsen Navigation system which offers voice control.
As before, the new ŠKODA Fabia comes with Euro NCAP’s maximum five-star crash-test rating, in recognition of the array of passive and active safety features included as standard. Seatbelt reminders are fitted with all positions, while multiple airbags are provided and ISOFIX child seat anchorage points are supplied with the outer rear seats. And there’s the option to include top-and-bottom ISOFIX fixtures in the front passenger seat.
In terms of driver aids, several new ones have been introduced to the vehicle, including Lane Assist System and Autonomous Emergency Braking. The former informs the driver if the car starts to stray from its lane, and the latter significantly reduces the risk of frontal collision.
